Dick and Carolyn Humerickhouse

Profiled February 11, 2011

One of the things I can tell you about Dick Humerickhouse is that he adores his wife, Carolyn. I’m not sure how many years they have been married, but it’s obvious to me that they are a profound witness of Christian marriage.

They complement each other very well. They are both natives of Ohio. Carolyn’s hometown is Zanesville, and Dick was raised in Van Wert. Dick’s work with IBM brought them to Maryland in 1968, and they remember worshiping with Good Shepherd’s fledgling congregation back when it didn’t even have its own worship space.

Dick and Carolyn have blessed our congregation with leadership over many, many years and it’s time for us to say thank you. Dick has played many roles in Good Shepherd ministry committees over the years. He served as church Treasurer, and has been involved with Finance, Property, Worship and Music, Shepherding Groups and Seniors/Retirees. Dick has been most visible as the coordination of our Usher Teams for many years. He has served very faithfully week in and week out during Sunday worship and on church holidays, with never a break except for vacation.

Carolyn has been active in Music Ministry for over four decades: Singing in the Chancel Choir and in drama productions, ringing with Good Shepherd Ringers bell ensemble, performing in Social Ministry’s Housing Benefit Concerts, and accompanying children’s choirs. She has been the recording secretary for Worship and Music Committee for many years. She has been a part of the

monthly Phoebe Circle Women’s Bible study and Seniors/Retirees group, a coordinator of Worship Assistants, and so many other roles.

Dick and Carolyn have often come to the church to take special mailings and newsletters from the church office to the post office -- a simple but incredibly important behind-the-scenes job.

They are good friends to many and deeply passionate about seeing our church continue to move ahead.

“When we first moved to the Gaithersburg area, Good Shepherd was meeting at the junior high school,” Dick and Carolyn recalled. “We were immediately welcomed and felt the warmth and friendliness of the congregation.”

“Never before, in the different churches we had joined in other areas, had we felt so strongly a sense of belonging. Years later, when we retired and thought about possibly leaving the area, we knew we could never replace Good Shepherd.”

“The church has been blessed with excellent leadership with Pastor Dan Oravec and now with Pastor Dave. What a sense of accomplishment is felt by so many of us because of how the church has grown from meeting in a junior high school to what we have today! Good Shepherd feels like home to us, and we are proud to be a part of the Good Shepherd family,” they added.

Dick and Carolyn — thank you for all you do and for your Christian witness. You are a great blessing!
